A Delta Air Lines flight from Boston to New Orleans was forced to turn around shortly after takeoff after a "smoky odor" was detected in the cabin. Flight 1398 took off from Logan International Airport at 8:55 a.m. on Sunday (March 2) morning. After just a few minutes in the air, the flight crew reported the odor and the pilot declared an emergency and returned to Boston.

The Airbus A220 landed safely at 9:35 a.m. and was met by emergency responders. The plane was able to taxi to the gate and all 87 customers were evacuated without incident.

"Delta flight 1398 returned to Boston shortly after takeoff after a smoky odor was detected in the cabin," the airline said in a statement. "Our flight crew followed established procedures and returned to Boston safely. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels."

Officials did not say what caused the odor.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that it has launched an investigation into the incident.
